In a world increasingly marked by authoritarian rhetoric, disinformation, and digital surveillance, the right to speak freely is more vital than ever.

Freedom of expression is not simply about speaking without fear; it is the cornerstone of any democratic society. It allows individuals to denounce abuse, defend their rights, and engage in public life. Yet, even in countries considered democratic, this freedom is regularly restricted — often in the name of national security, countering hate speech, or maintaining public order.

As host to the United Nations Human Rights Council and numerous international NGOs, Geneva provides a unique arena where freedom of expression is debated on legal, political, and ethical grounds. Journalists under threat find shelter here, human rights defenders raise their voices, and states are held accountable for their obligations.

The Swiss Agency for Development and Human Rights (ASDHr) is committed to ensuring that Geneva remains a space of dialogue, protection, and advocacy for freedom of expression. We support initiatives that defend whistleblowers, challenge censorship, and promote a culture of respectful and inclusive debate.

In a hyperconnected world where expressing an opinion can lead to persecution or exile, it is urgent to restore freedom of expression to the core of the human rights agenda. Geneva must continue to act as a beacon — not only through its institutions, but through its citizens, scholars, artists, and activists. Together, let us uphold free speech as a pillar of human dignity.

_________
